My Holiday Gift Edit: Claire Olshan of DADA Daily

The creator of haute healthy snack brand DADA Daily shares the It-jacket she’s wishing for, and her super-chill approach to party prepping.

Is holiday shopping sending you into a tailspin? You need a little inspiration! For this four-part series, The Awesome News asked successful, stylish moms to share their go-to gift picks, and what they’ll do to make this holiday season more manageable and memorable.

MEET CLAIRE OLSHAN

Claire Olshan had the whole of New York talking this year when she launched her haute healthy snack-food brand, DADA Daily, at a party in this Fifth Avenue apartment. The evening was extravagant, theatrical and achingly chic. And that’s how Claire rolls. The mom of one, and former owner of ultra-hip Upper East Side boutique Fivestory, drew on her love of Surrealist art and mindful eating to create a collection of beautiful-looking, naturally vegan snacks (we’re blissfully munching on Crunchy Sweet Potato Aioli Curls and Schisandra Chocolate Petite Bars). DADA’s artfully packaged, bite-sized treats are perfect for stashing in the stroller or delighting dinner guests.

Check out Claire’s gift edit below…

For Moms

1. Ta-Dada Dinner Party Hack SetThis is a festive fun night in a box! The most delicious vegan snacks for hors d’oeuvres, an entire tablescape for decor (including a hand candle, napkin rings and place cards), and the most adorable truffles in the shape of lips and eyes for dessert.
2. Fitbit: I really don’t get to work out as much as I’d like, but this thing keeps me on track. It tells me when to walk that extra block or flight of stairs, or just be silly and jump up and down with my son for some extra smiles and calories. It also tracks my sleep!

For Kids

3. Super Smalls jewelry: So adorable! I’m buying it for all my nieces this year.
4. Fisher-Price Power Wheels ride-on car: Every kid needs to have that OH MY GOD moment of “You bought me a car!”

A LITTLE HOLIDAY Q&A…

What’s the best gift you’ve ever received?

A trip to Blackberry Mountain in Tennessee. I love experiential gifts that both the person gifting and the recipient can enjoy. It’s still one of my favorite trips of all time.

And what’s on your wish list this year?

A Khaite suede fringe jacket – it’s the perfect combo of fun, decadence and chic.

What holiday tradition are you most looking forward to sharing with your son?

We’re hoping to start a tradition of doing some charity work, going to soup kitchens, and teaching Maxwell that during a time of an abundance of food and love and family, you should never take them for granted.

Say you have five minutes to get ready for a party. What’s your go-to beauty shortcut?

Put your face in an ice bath 10 times for 10 seconds each – sure to brighten a tired mom’s face in no time. Also, red lips!

Best entertaining hack to impress guests?

Everything DADA Daily.

Weirdest celebrity encounter?

I walked in on Wes Anderson at a urinal at Bar Pitti once. (I obviously went into the men’s room by accident!)

Who should we follow on Instagram?

@leandramcohen, @rosie_assoulin and @nelliediamond are some of my closest friends, but also my inspiration as moms, entrepreneurs and all around good people!

My Holiday Gift Edit: Ariel Kaye of Parachute Home

We chatted with the founder of super-chic lifestyle brand Parachute about making new traditions and her best overnight-host hack.

Is holiday shopping sending you into a tailspin? You need a little inspiration! For this four-part series, The Awesome News asked successful, stylish moms to share their go-to gift picks, and what they’ll do to make this holiday season more manageable and memorable.

MEET ARIEL KAYE

A lifelong interiors-lover, Parachute founder (and surfing-slash-yoga enthusiast) Ariel Kaye set out to make premium-quality lifestyle essentials that anyone could own. We’re obsessed with Parachute’s luxury-yet-reasonably-priced percale sheet sets, thick Turkish cotton bathrobes, and cloud-like comforters – all in dreamy neutral hues inspired by Ariel’s natural, beachy surroundings and wellness-focused lifestyle. In just five years, Parachute has grown from a scrappy office in a two-bedroom Venice Beach apartment to a 17,000 square foot HQ, and Ariel plans to open her 20th Parachute store by 2020. To top it off, she recently welcomed baby daughter Lou to the world!

Check out Ariel’s gift edit below…

For Moms

1. Hatch Baby Rest Light & Sound Machine: This is a bedtime game changer! The different lights and sounds signal to the baby that it’s time to unwind and get ready for bed. We never spend a night without it.
2. Baby Bjorn Carrier Mini: Soft, comfortable and lightweight. The fabric is very breathable and I love taking walks with Lou around the neighborhood in it.

For Kids

3. DVF x Rockets of Awesome Velvet Jumpsuit: I am loving this DVF collab. How chic! I have my eye on this jumpsuit for my friend’s daughter. She will look so cute this holiday season.
4. Manhattan Toy Musical Lili Llama: My daughter loves music and her music class. I recently saw the Musical Llama and can’t wait to get it for Lou when she is a little older. In the meantime, I’ll gift it to my friends with toddlers.

A LITTLE HOLIDAY Q&A…

What’s the best gift you’ve ever received?

I have an engraved necklace that says “Lou James” from Ariel Gordon Jewelry. I wear it every day and love having my daughter close to me at all times.

And what’s on your wish list this year?

This year, I’m all about getting some “me” time and care less about getting stuff. I’m asking for a deep tissue massage or maybe even a one-night staycation in Malibu, so I can catch up on sleep!

Any traditions you look forward to sharing with Lou for the first time?

For us, the holidays are all about quality time together. This means long leisurely meals, lounging around in comfy clothes and family walks on the beach. We celebrate both Hanukkah and Christmas – i’m excited to light the menorah and watch Lou try her first latkes. On Christmas, we gather around the piano and sing holiday songs. Lou loves music and playing the tambourine, so that will be really fun!

Best trick for making overnight guests feel at home?

I love hosting! I want to make my guests feel comfortable without having to make too many changes to my home. I always leave a quilt at the foot of the bed so that guests can layer to feel either warmer or cooler at night, depending on their sleep style. I also like to anticipate needs by leaving a phone charger, Wi-Fi password and a carafe with glasses on the bedside table.

Say you have five minutes to get ready for a party. What do you wear to feel instantly polished?

I always gravitate to jumpsuits – I usually find something I love from Reformation, Rag & Bone or Vince. I love that just one piece can create an entire look. I’ll accessorize with gold bracelets and rings and I’m ready to go!

Who should we follow on Instagram?

@gerihirsch for all things motherhood – she just had her second baby!
@ashleykane for style inspiration
@parachutehome for the best home inspiration 🙂

Introducing… DVF x Rockets of Awesome Collection for Kids

Our super-special, super-limited-edition kids’ collection with DVF and Rent the Runway is finally here!

This holiday season, we came together with two female-founded brands – DVF and Rent the Runway – to create a super-special, super-limited-edition DVF x Rockets of Awesome kids’ collection! Inspired by DVF’s womenswear line, we designed five girls’ party styles that celebrate confidence and self-expression.

The campaign stars four awesome mother-daughter duos: CEO, activist and entrepreneur, Adrienne Bosh (@mrsadriennebosh) and daughter Dylan Skye; Women’s Health Editor-in-Chief Liz Plosser and daughter Lucy; DANNIJO President and Co-founder Jodie Snyder Morel and daughter Margaux; and Creative Director of STARK Ashley Stark Kenner and daughter Willa. All are powerhouse leaders and innovators who are raising their kids to be bold, creative and independent just like them.

These incredible women shared with The Awesome News what confidence means to them…

Adrienne is mom to Lennox, Phoenix, Jackson, Trinity, and
Dylan Skye, who wears our Rainbow Stripe Sequin Dress.

Adrienne, what does it take to be a confident woman in 2019?

Confidence is not allowing yourself to be defined based on how others see you, but seeing yourself for who you are; and learning to love every part of you, quirks and all. My confidence comes from all the times I’ve fallen down and learned to pick myself up, dust myself off and get back to work. When you’re down, the best way to find confidence is to remember your dreams for the future and commit to realizing them today. My children, my husband [retired NBA star Chris Bosh] and my friends are also great at reminding me to not be so hard on myself and to celebrate the little victories.

Past or present, which person in your life best represents confidence to you?

I’m most impressed by the women who find their own small ways to express their pride in who they are. Women who stand outside basketball games registering people to vote. Women speaking out against injustice. Women who work one, two or three jobs, even as they’re responsible for taking care of their families. These women don’t only embody confidence; they are an inspiration to me. And they remind me, even if I have a hard day, to keep on fighting. Because I know they’re fighting for a better future alongside me.

How are you teaching confidence to your daughters?

I try to lead by example by showing up for myself every day, affirming my worth, and practicing self-care. When you have kids, you spend so much time being there for them, but you have to never stop being there for yourself. Especially because you want your kids, and your daughters in particular, to know that when they’re moms, they should be able to practice self-care, too.

How do your daughters show they’re confident?

For one, they’re happy and positive girls! My daughters also have unique and individual styles that help express their personalities. My baby girl, Dylan Skye, LOVES fashion, art, and horse-riding, which always lights her up and gives her confidence. Trinity is more reserved but still finds ways to demonstrate her confidence whenever it comes to anything she’s passionate about. When she knows a topic, she reallyyyy knows it—and she’ll tell you about it!

ADRIENNE’S TOP 3 EMPOWERING INSTA FOLLOWS:

@createcultivate: “All about entrepreneurship and honing in on your skills.”
@mindbodygreen: “An excellent source for female wellness and mental health.”
@iamavoter: “It encourages women to be more vocal and politically involved.”

Liz is mom to Charlie, George, and Lucy, who wears our Velvet Jumpsuit.

Liz, what does it take to be a confident woman in 2019?

Finding your voice… and then using it. Your opinions, your words – they matter. Whether it’s talking about equal pay, reproductive rights, immigration, climate change, or just speaking your mind in a meeting, in your relationships, wherever and everywhere… nothing changes unless we tap into our inner power and share our thoughts and feelings, however complicated they might be. By the way, I’m still learning to do this every.single.day.

Past or present, which person in your life best represents confidence to you?

My mom! She was a badass trial lawyer before retiring. One of the (many) things she taught me about confidence was that you can be strong AND soft. She would crush it in the courtroom, passionately fighting for her clients. But she also took/takes every opportunity to tell me, my little sister and my older and younger brothers (and my dad!), that she loves us. Growing up, there were always hugs and snuggles, and that’s something I try to nurture in my kiddos, too. I’m proud whenever I see them cuddling each other, and when one of them says, “I need a hug, mama.” It’s powerful to show affection, to say you need some, and to receive it!

How do you demonstrate confidence to your daughter?

When I sweat, I feel sharp, strong and confident. Lucy sees me up early in my workout clothes, coming back from lifting weights at the gym or a run through Prospect Park with flushed cheeks, bright eyes and a big smile. I’m a better woman – mom, wife, manager, employee, friend, daughter! – when I’ve pushed myself physically and am brimming with endorphins.

How does your daughter show she’s confident?

Lucy is one of the most creative humans I know. For example: She loves sewing! Lucy makes clothes for herself, and stuffed animals for her brothers. (She even stitched her twin brother a superhero cape to wear to school on Halloween.) I’m doing my best to empower her to hang onto her unique spirit, because our differences and personalities make us even more beautiful as women.

LIZ’S TOP 3 EMPOWERING INSTA FOLLOWS:

@theclass: “I love this mind/body workout, created by my friend Taryn Toomey, for its vulnerability and strength. I find myself adding posts from their handle to my IG stories regularly.”
@juleshough: “I’m obsessed with her new Kinology workout, even though I am the world’s worst dancer! Her Insta feed is a mix of celebrating her love of dance, her work, her red carpet moments and her family, and I’m here for it!”
@uswnt: “Major shout out to this handle, which spotlights the badass women on our United States soccer team, who won their second World Cup in a row in July, and who are collectively and individually stepping up to advocate for equal pay for women in sports – and all industries.”

Jodie is mom to Liev, and Margaux, who wears our Faux Fur Jacket.

Jodie, what does it take to be a confident woman in 2019?

It’s important to be comfortable in your own skin and stand up for what you believe in. Know your limits and empower other women around you. As my sister [and DANNIJO co-founder] Danielle says, “I’ve always loved the notion that lighting someone else’s candle doesn’t take away light from your own.”

Past or present, which person in your life best represents confidence to you?

Definitely my mom and Danielle. My mother always taught us to trust our gut and push ourselves out of our comfort zones. My sister is completely fearless and herself all the time. Unapologetic, funny, and charismatic.

How do you show confidence to your kids?

I think it’s important for my kids to see me as a present and loving mother, and also as a hard-working woman. I try to include my kids whenever I can so they can see the value of work and how much joy it brings my sister and I.

What do your kids do to show they are confident?

They support each other and remind one another how much they are loved and appreciated. They are each other’s greatest champions.

What do you wear to feel confident?

DANNIJO head-to-toe: a slip, cozy sweater and arm party. I feel proud that I get to wear a part of the sisterhood, and I know how much went into each garment and piece of jewelry. It’s like wrapping myself in love and confidence; I hope I radiate that every day. And a red lip always makes me feel alive.
