Short Answers From Sarah Michelle Gellar

Sarah Michelle Gellar has been slaying it. Nope, not vampires in a Buffy movie (much to her fan club’s dismay) – she was perfecting recipes for her brand new cookbook, Stirring Up Fun With Food.

In case you’re scratching your head right now, let us back up a bit. A few years ago, Sarah launched a super-fun line of healthy (and totally delicious) baking kits and mixes called Foodstirs to get you and your kids bonding in the kitchen.

With two young kids – Charlotte (7.5) and Rocky (4.5) – she wanted to be home more, so she was searching for that thing that would allow her to do that. Cut to a conversation with mom friend Galit Laibow about playground alternatives, and a business idea was born.

“Cooking has never been my super specialty, but I enjoy my time in the kitchen, and the kids love to help. Then I read articles about how family dinners result in less teenage alcohol/drug abuse and better relationships with your kids, and I knew we were on to something.”

They teamed up with fellow parent and friend Greg Fleishman (co-founder & COO), and for the last 3 years, they have been working full-time on the business – testing, tweaking, and perfecting recipes. “I don’t want to teach my kids that food has to taste bad to be good for you – it’s not true!” she told us.

We grilled Sarah her on her marriage of 15 years (!!) to Freddie Prinze Jr., being a strict parent, and whether you can expect to see her in front of the camera again. Take it away, Sarah!

Not The Same Old Cookbook

I’m not a chef, and these are not 15-ingredient recipes. It’s food-crafting. We eat with our eyes first, so this takes food and elevates it to next level with fun presentations. Plus, it’s full of creative ways to make healthy food appealing to kids and is all organized by month/holiday/theme. The recipes are all meant to be made with kids as a fun activity.

The Foodstirs Difference

  • We’re all about rainbows at Foodstirs right now with cake pops and pancakes. We use all-natural food coloring (think beets instead of Red 40), so you get the wow-effect without using yucky dyes.
  • Every recipe is less than 6 steps and uses 6 ingredients (or less).
  • We take our ingredients seriously, always using the best possible. We use biodynamic sugar, which is better than organic because it’s so pure and sweet that you need less of it. We use the most fairly traded cocoa on the market. And the heirloom flour we use, we can track back to the acre it was grown on!

On Acting Again

Content has changed so much and requires video now, so I still get to engage that fun, creative side of myself doing Foodstirs. I would go back in front of the camera some day, but for raising kids, it’s been amazing not to have to travel constantly and spend long days on set.

On Her Career

I feel so fortunate to have been able to do everything that I have. Buffy, Cruel Intentions, Foodstirs – it’s all part of my legacy, and it’s amazing when someone loves anything I’ve been a part of creating. Hosting SNL, the MTV Movie Awards, and the European Music Awards (live from The Coliseum in Italy!) have all been career highlights, but even those less fun jobs are great learning experiences. It’s all what you take away from it – like a new friend or just knowing what you don’t want to do again.

We have a set of rules our kids have to follow, and they know what is expected of them. Whomever is in charge, the rules are consistent. We are strict about bedtime. They are in bed at 7, lights out at 7:30. Kids need sleep, it’s so important. They’ll complain that their friends get to stay up later, and I’m like, well, not in this house!

Freddie and I have been married for almost 15 years. We live by the immortal words of Tim Gunn, ‘Make it work.’ always said in our best Tim Gunn voice, of course. Whether it’s your husband, business partner, or friend, communication is the key to a good relationship. Passive aggressiveness gets you nowhere fast.

Sanity Saver

We do One Potato 3 nights off a week for dinner, and it’s so good. Last night was the best chicken curry I’ve ever had. And they take less than 20 minutes to make!
